After my Lenovo Ideacentre A goes to “sleep” for a long time overnight and I try to wake it up the screen, the screen stays black. I see and hear disc drive activity and I believe not confirmed that the PC has woken up waiting for my password, but screen remains black. No cursor to be seen.

Booting to BIOS or Safe mode results in same, black screen, it appears booth actually has occurred but screen is black. I even tried booting from a windows rescue dvd, lots of drive activity loading , beeping, etc, still resulting in black screen.

Note that throughout the day, my PC does goes to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity, but wakes up normally. Problem occurs overnight when it is in sleep mode for a long time, Every morning I find the problem and need to remove power to resolve.

I did update drivers and I believe are current. Problem occurred after I upgraded to WIndows 10, no such problem with 8. I’m thinking something is going on with the HDMI connection to the display and that if I could unplug the HDMI cable it would result the same as unplugging the power cord. Just a theory based on some other posts related to black screen. Anyway, thanks in advance for any help provided to resolve my issue, including any tips for further diagnosing the issue.

I suspect the issue might due to malfunction of the drivers. T ry installing graphics drivers in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows. Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists. Let us know if problem still persist, we’re glad to assist you. Hope this will address your query. Was this reply helpful?

Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Thank you for your reply and recommendation to install drivers in compatibility mode.

I will try that after I checkout a potential cause of my problem, my usb hub. I discovered that when I unplugged the power cord from my PC , the monitor display still showed power, that is the power indicator light was on.

That seemed odd. When I disconnected my USB hub by un-attaching the usb cable , the power light went off. I left the hub unattached. The next morning my PC woke up from sleep with no problems. I’ll see if this continuous for the next several days. Not sure what it all means, but it appears the usb hub was sending some power to the monitor cperhaps causing the problem.

Cursor is visible on secondary but not primary and I am able to run applications using the second monitor, I am able to shutdown normally from the secondary monitor. When I reboot after shutdown, I get the same problem black screen, and am able to follow the previous process with the second monitor. Only way to get out of this situation is to shutdown and remove power form the PC.

Adding power and rebooting again, primary monitor works as it should. So to recap; while primary monitor is black, system has actually woken from sleep. Shutting down normal does not resolve problem. Removing power resolves issue. Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit 2 people found this reply helpful. Same here. If I reboot or it sleeps, it will stay off. When I shut down, I have to hear it power down sounds a bit like when you pull the plug, but it isn’t necessary. Has been happening for quite a while. I disable sleep and it mostly operates fine. I know it is working because I can access the computer via GoToMyPC, and it works fine plus it is the controller for my Sonos and Plex usages on other machines , but the screen just doesn’t show up Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.

Additional information I discovered in attempt to diagnose and resolve: I added a second monitor using an USB adapter. After a normal startup the second monitor is recognized.

When the sleep problem occurs I am able to blindly add my password code. Hope this provides additional clues. Thanks for continued help to resolve this issue. Problem only showed up after the Windows 10 update. I keep my computer on all the time and only have my display turn off after 10 minutes. Throughout the day the screen turns on with a simple press of the space bar.
