Latest News: Windows 11 will soon let you know how long updates take to install. Featured Deal: This portable Posted 05 January – AM. Okay, I realize the following plea for help is pretty wordy, but I wanted to give you the full background.

As a long time Windows user, I’ve previously always used the local user account method for installing Windows and Microsoft Office on all of our family computers.

This method has worked pretty well until recently. However, I just built or bought newer computers for several family members. This required me to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 Home on one of the PCs.

So far, so good. However, getting the four one-time-purchase copies of Office Home and Student I’d just bought on sale ended up being a lot more complicated. Yes – I was finally upgrading all our PCs from the venerable old Office Well, it turns out I needed to finally create a Microsoft Account for myself in order to download the four “one-time-purchase” copies of Office Home and Student which I’d recently bought from Best Buy. The store had sold me four plastic cards containing MS Office Key codes, instead of the more traditional boxed DVD sets that I was accustomed to using, I initially thought this was really convenient, but soon learned otherwise.

It started out okay, although the process of downloading the four copies of Office via the Microsoft Account I’d created for myself was more complicated than simply booting up a CD in an optical drive. Well, it then got worse. I initially tried logging into the single Microsoft Account I’d created in order to retrieve all the various Key codes, but this turned out to be fruitless. My Microsoft Account showed only the dates when I’d installed the first three copies of Office I haven’t gotten around to installing the fourth copy of Office yet , and it did not show me any of the Office activation Key codes.

In addition, my Microsoft Account did not show any of the Windows 10 Key codes for our family computersl. No problem, I initially thought, since I still had the four physical copies of plastic Key code cards that I’d bought from Best Buy, plus had a CD for the one copy of Windows 10 I’d also bought. This turned out to be more complicated than I originally thought. The Key codes for our various Windows 10 installations mostly matched, with one weird exceptions – the Windows 10 Key code for the used computer I’d just bought from Goodwill was exactly the same as the Windows 10 Key code already being used by another family computers that had been bought long ago.

However, the Key codes extracted for the various Office installations on our family computers did not match at all, and some of the info seemed like sheer nonsense.

For example, according to the above Key finder tools, the new PC I’d recently built for myself was displaying either only a five-digit code much too short for Office , or else was displaying no Office Key code at all. The refurbished laptop I’d just bought for our daughter also showing the same thing. After checking our other family computers, the situation quickly got worse. My wife’s old computer which we were getting ready to replace with one I’d recently snagged from Goodwill , had temporarily been upgraded from Office to Office However, the Key finder tools showed either a short five-digit code Office Key code that didn’t match the Office Key code listed on the Best Buy plastic card, or else said Office was still installed on her computer, even though that had been uninstalled and replaced with Office Therefore, the Key finders were mistakenly displaying the Key code for the earlier Office that was no longer installed.

In addition, although our daughters desktop computer which I had not made any recent software changes to correctly displayed the Key code for the old version of Office Standard still installed on it, but some of the Key finders were falsely reporting that a copy of an even earlier Office version was also still installed.

If so, please let me know what other install method I should try instead. Edited by hamluis, 05 January – PM. Duck Duck Go is my friend. Make Duck Duck Go your friend too. Posted 05 January – PM. With Windows 10 there is a built in app called “get help.
